Assistant Head of YearBack

Skinners’ Academy is an ambitious, inclusive and high-achieving school community where we expect both students and staff to strive for excellence. We foster a culture of high challenge and high support, underpinned by strong relationships, academic rigour and a commitment to ensuring every young person can succeed. We are proud of our broad and intellectually demanding curriculum, our rich enrichment offer and our highly effective pastoral systems, all of which contribute to a vibrant and aspirational learning environment.

About the Role

We are seeking to appoint a highly motivated, organised and committed Assistant Head of Year to support the effective running of a year group and help secure strong outcomes for students in relation to achievement, progress, attendance, behaviour and pastoral care. This is an important role within the pastoral structure of the Academy and would suit a professional who is passionate about inclusion, student wellbeing and maintaining high expectations for all.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Head of Year, the Pastoral Vice Principal and other colleagues to support the day-to-day leadership of the year group. You will play a key role in promoting excellent attendance, positive behaviour, strong communication with families and effective intervention for students who need additional support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the effective running of a year group, including oversight of attendance, behaviour, achievement and pastoral support.
  • Provide high-quality pastoral leadership and contribute to the work of the wider year team.
  • Lead on aspects of attendance and behaviour monitoring, implementing Academy systems and policies consistently and effectively.
  • Work with the Head of Year to devise, implement, monitor and evaluate strategies to improve attendance, punctuality and behaviour.
  • Act as a mentor and personal adviser to students, helping them to overcome barriers to learning and engage positively with school life.
  • Keep parents and carers informed about attendance, behaviour and pastoral concerns, and build constructive relationships that support student success.
  • Maintain accurate records and files relating to attendance, behaviour and pastoral matters, ensuring a high degree of confidentiality at all times.
  • Produce reports, documents and correspondence, including confidential material for meetings, behaviour management processes and exclusions where required.
  • Support the coordination of interventions for students with emotional, behavioural or attendance-related needs, working in line with the SEN Code of Practice where appropriate.
  • Support staff in maintaining high standards of behaviour and following up incidents in a timely and professional manner.
  • Collate relevant documentation for meetings with parents, external partners and other stakeholders.
  • Deliver pastoral interventions and support the development of strategies that promote student wellbeing, engagement and success.

Leadership and Management

  • Work with the Pastoral Vice Principal, Head of Year, other middle leaders and the year team to develop and deliver a meaningful pastoral and tutor time programme.
  • Support the planning and delivery of effective and inspiring pastoral provision, including assemblies, tutor activities and other year-group initiatives.
  • Lead on the tracking of attendance and implementation of interventions or required actions to improve attendance.
  • Fulfil the requirements of all Academy policies, including the Behaviour Policy, Safeguarding Policy and Attendance Policy.
  • Liaise with staff, governors, external agencies and other bodies as appropriate.
  • Contribute positively to the wider leadership capacity of the Academy.

What We Are Looking For

You will be a highly motivated professional who enjoys working as part of a high-performing team. You will be committed to helping young people succeed and will have a strong understanding of the importance of attendance, behaviour, safeguarding and inclusive pastoral support in securing positive outcomes for students. You will be calm, resilient and solution-focused, with excellent interpersonal and organisational skills and the ability to build positive relationships with students, families and colleagues.

You will share the Academy’s commitment to high expectations, inclusive education and continuous improvement, and will be eager to contribute to the wider life of the school.

How to Apply

Please submit a completed application form in line with the Academy’s recruitment process. We do not accept CVs.

Skinners’ Academies Trust is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful applicant will be required to undertake an enhanced DBS check and all safer recruitment checks relevant to the post.
